The APPG on Hydrogen provides a forum for MPs and Peers to engage with leading businesses and organisations that are working to enable the UK to meet its decarbonisation targets through the implementation of hydrogen projects, and to discuss policy options to support these.

APPG ON HYDROGEN CHAIR RESPONDS TO GOVERNMENT’S HYDROGEN BLENDING DECISION - 14 Dec 2023

The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Hydrogen welcomes today’s decision to support blending of up to 20% hydrogen by volume into the GB gas distribution networks.

Under the chairmanship of Alexander Stafford, MP for Rother Valley, the Group has championed the benefits of hydrogen blending and worked with industry partners and parliamentarians to highlight the economic benefit and impact to help achieve the UK’s net zero ambitions. This also brings the UK in line with our closest trading partners, saving millions in deblending costs.

The APPG, now in its fifth year, seeks to raise awareness and build support for hydrogen projects that will enable the UK to meet decarbonisation targets.

The APPG also welcomes the suite of announcements from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero – including the backing for 11 major projects to produce green hydrogen over the next three years. The new projects will create over 700 jobs, contributing to the UK’s green economy and providing much needed certainty for the industry.

In response to the announcement Mr Stafford said:

“The Government has re-confirmed its commitment to hydrogen as an integral part of our green transition in the nick of time. Having campaigned for the Government to approve hydrogen blending in our gas network, I am pleased that they have seen sense, and we will now be able to bring down carbon emissions from one of the most carbon intensive sectors and continue to allow interoperation with our neighbours.

While it has been much delayed, today’s announcement stands as irrefutable evidence that the UK is the world-leader in hydrogen; with the largest number of green hydrogen production projects announced at once anywhere in Europe, and the second round of the competition announced today could mean 1GW of hydrogen capacity in operation or construction as soon as 2025.

I am pleased that my efforts to promote hydrogen, both inside and outside the House, have been rewarded, and that businesses now can have the long-term confidence in British hydrogen, through the Hydrogen Production Delivery Roadmap as well as the Hydrogen Transport and Storage Networks Pathway, which they have been calling out for.

I look forward to continuing to support the Government to make the UK the home for global hydrogen."

About the Group

The APPG on Hydrogen was established in July 2018. It is a cross-party group of MPs and Peers that focuses on raising awareness of, and building support for large scale hydrogen projects – such as conversion to a hydrogen domestic gas grid – that will enable the UK to meet decarbonisation targets.

The APPG on Hydrogen is chaired by Alexander Stafford, Conservative MP for Rother Valley.

Upcoming event

Hydrogen and Storage

Date: 22 May

Time: 4-5pm

Venue: Macmillan Room, Portcullis House

Despite the UK’s favourable position as a producer of hydrogen, and the steps it has taken to capitalise on this, the same level of resource has yet to be devoted to tackle the next issue in the hydrogen supply chain: storage.

This session will examine the need for a UK Energy Storage Strategy, and how different forms of storage can be utilised to capitalise on the UK’s potential for hydrogen production.

This event is taking place in the Macmillan Room, Portcullis House. Unfortunately, this is an in-person only event.
